BMW 335i and 335i xDrive Get 20hp Boost With New M Power Kit

BMW today announced a new M Performance Power Kit for the 2012 model year and later BMW 335i Sedan and 335i xDrive Sedan models. The M Performance Power Kit joins the existing M Performance Parts line which includes chassis, aerodynamics, exhaust system components, and trim accessories. Developed through consultation by the engineers at BMW M GmbH, the M Performance Power Kit is immediately available through all Authorized BMW Centers in the US, with MSRP starting at $1,100 (plus Installation) and retains BMW’s 4-Year / 50,000-mile New Vehicle Warranty when purchased with a new vehicle.

More Power. More Dynamic. More Emotion.
Once the Power Kit is installed, the vehicle’s rated horsepower is increased from 300 to 320 on all models. Automatic transmission-equipped models enjoy a 32 lb-ft peak torque increase (to 332 lb-ft), while manual transmission-equipped models benefit from a 17 lb-ft peak torque increase (to 317 lb-ft). All models receive a re-mapped accelerator pedal calibration for more dynamic throttle response, and the Power Kit produces a signature, highly-emotional “exhaust burble” sound during engine overrun conditions. 0-60mph acceleration is improved 0.2 seconds compared to standard 335i models, while 50-75mph times drop by a full half-second.

The BMW M Performance Power Kit features comprehensive engine tuning via advanced software 335i and 335i xDrive Sedan models. The kit includes updated software or replacement engine DME (electronic control unit), high-capacity engine air intake system, signature BMW M Performance engine cover, and rocker panel decals. This gives the 335i Sedan or 335i xDrive Sedan a substantial power boost (+20 horsepower) while retaining the original 50-state legal emissions certification and fuel efficiency ratings.

Installed with Confidence.
The vehicle’s original BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty is not affected by the installation of the M Performance Power Kit, and Kit components are covered under warranty for the duration of the original BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty (4 Years / 50,000 miles) if purchased at the time of new vehicle sale, or for 2 Years / unlimited miles if installed later.

BMW M3 Competition Edition Frozen Silver Exterior

Celebrating BMW’s long history of racing success in North America and 40 years of BMW M

BMW of North America today announced the 2012 M3 Competition Edition featuring Frozen Silver exterior paint and other enhancements. To honor the 40 years since the founding of BMW M in 1972, production for the United States of these very special M3 Coupes will be limited to 40 identically-equipped cars. Each features BMW Individual Frozen Silver Metallic exterior paint with a deep metallic luster to accentuate the athletic lines of the legendary M3. The unique exterior treatment also includes black hood intakes and dark chrome exterior trim, including the kidney grills, the M side gills and the exhaust tips. Black M3 GTS wheels complete the striking exterior. The interior features black Extended Novillo Leather with unique palladium silver accents and palladium silver-contrast stitching on front seats, headrests, door trim panels / handles, center console, and center armrest. The interior is further distinguished with an Alcantara-covered multi-function M steering wheel with M3 Checkered Flag logo inlay. The door sill finishers also feature the M3 Checkered Flag logo while the handbrake lever sports an embroidered M Power logo. As a final touch, genuine Carbon Fiber trims the dash and center console. The 2012 BMW M3 Competition Edition will be offered for an MSRP of $81,060 including destination and handling.

Unlike previous M3 Edition models, one each of the 40 2012 M3 Competition Edition models has been allocated to the first 40 US authorized BMW centers to become M Certified Centers.

Each 2012 M3 Competition Edition will be powered by the award-winning 4.0-liter, 414-horsepower M V8 engine, equipped with BMW’s M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) which lowers the 0-60mph acceleration time of the M3 to 4.5 seconds from 4.7. Redline is a breathtaking 8,400 rpm.

The 2012 Competition Edition M3 continues the tradition of innovation and passion for driving by incorporating key changes to the M3’s dynamic qualities. The included Competition Package reduces vehicle ride height by 10mm and includes M3 GTS 19-inch wheels (in black for this Edition) with wider offset for enhanced stability, standard Electronic Damping Control with enhanced programming, and higher-threshold programming for the M Dynamic Mode.

A complete list of equipment may be found at the end of this release.

Competition Edition celebrates the M3’s rich racing history in the US.

The checkered flags emblazoned on the door sills and steering wheel of the M3 Competition Edition pay tribute to more than a decade of BMW GT class success on the racing circuits of North America.

From Lime Rock Park in the Litchfield Hills of Western Connecticut to Laguna Seca Raceway just north of California’s Monterey Bay, the BMW M3 has given sports car racing fans across North America reason to cheer since the first BMW of North America M3 racing program began in 1995.

With drivers such as Bill Auberlen, Boris Said and the legendary Hans Stuck, the BMW M3 dominated the GT classes of sports car racing in the States into the new millennium with two generations of BMW M3 (E36 and E46), winning 53 of 118 races entered. In 1997 the BMW M3 became one of the few Marques ever to win its class at both the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring in the same year. As remarkable as that was, the feat was repeated the very next year.

A decade and a half later the BMW M3 continues to top the American Le Mans Series podiums against a tough field of GT competitors. Led by American racing icon Bobby Rahal, BMW Team RLL won the ALMS GT Manufacturer and Team championships in both 2010 and 2011, with Joey Hand and Dirk Mϋller adding the Driver’s title this year for a clean sweep of all GT class championships.

About BMW Individual Frozen Paint Colors.

The special BMW Individual matte paintwork on the M3 Competition Edition adds a rare metallic luster to the vehicle. Compared to conventional exterior colors with gloss finish, the sculpture-like character of the Frozen Silver paint highlights the athletic contours of the M3. To achieve this luster, a special BMW-developed silk matte clear coat is applied over the Silver Metallic base coat. BMW Individual’s Frozen paints meet or exceed all BMW standards for durability and longevity, and feature a full factory warranty. Special care guidelines are provided to customers and authorized BMW centers to prevent the finish from becoming glossy.

bmw accessories ipad

New Aspects of Networked Mobility – BMW ConnectedDrive Solutions with Original BMW Accessories. Perfect integration of the Apple iPhoneTM and the Apple iPadTM into the automobile ensures that the BMW driver is always securely, reliably and completely in touch with his own personal online world when on the road.

The current capabilities of BMW ConnectedDrive include innovative functionality and a multitude of features which network the driver, the vehicle and the outside world.  New products, now available in the Original BMW Accessories range, enable the BMW driver to upgrade his existing vehicle with solutions and features to provide networked driving. These accessories provide additional, complementary opportunities to equip a BMW automobile with ConnectedDrive functionality, heightening (networked) driving pleasure still more. From now on, new innovative connectivity accessories will be available indulging the drivers of many of the current BMW models with the ability to take advantage of mobile Apple devices, securely and comfortably, in their vehicles.  The new range of Original BMW Accessories includes the BMW Station for the Apple iPhoneTM, the iPhone app BMW Link, the WLAN adapter BMW Car Hotspot and the BMW Apple iPadTM Station.

Your hotspot on the road – mobile Internet at your service at all times, everywhere.

The BMW Car Hotspot from the Original BMW Accessories range provides WLAN connectivity for Internet access while on the road. This innovative technology has been developed as an option that can be retrofitted to the vehicle to enable mobile devices such as smartphones, notebooks or the Apple iPadTM to connect to the Internet via WLAN; the online connection is made via the BMW Car Hotspot. The only thing necessary is a separate data SIM card, which is either placed in the snap-in adapter or in a smartphone with an SAP module (SIM Access Profile) in the vehicle. The BMW Car Hotspot, together with its power supply, is integrated into the central armrest and is connected to the vehicle’s antenna. The roof-mounted antenna ensures a stable Internet connection, while reducing the level of radiation in the interior of the automobile.

The passengers in the BMW can now wirelessly surf the Internet during the journey using any mobile device with a WLAN interface, via the unrestricted, encrypted WLAN connection. The smooth, interruption-free handover when moving between the UMTS and GSM data networks ensures coverage of almost 100%. The BMW Car Hotspot has been on sale at all BMW Dealerships and BMW Service Partners since January, priced at Euro 399. It can be installed in all BMW model series, dependent upon the year of manufacture.

BMW 1 Series and BMW 3 Series from 9/2008; BMW 5 Series and BMW 6 Series from 11/2008, BMW X5 and BMW X6 from 10/2009; all other current models can be equipped with the BMW Car Hotspot without restriction.

Apple iPhoneTM – perfectly integrated into the cockpit.

The Apple iPhoneTM can now be perfectly integrated into the BMW cockpit positioned so that it is always in the driver’s field of view. The innovative “BMW Station for Apple iPhoneTM”, is a high-quality, multifunctional holder from the Original BMW Accessories range which guarantees safe, comfortable operation of the 3G, 3GS and 4 Apple iPhonesTM during the journey. This attractively-designed holder for the Apple iPhoneTM is suitable for all BMW models which are not fitted with a display.  It is available as an upgrade option for the current BMW 1 Series, the BMW 3 Series, the BMW Z4 as well as for the BMW X1 and BMW X3. It allows the owner of an iPhone to integrate it into the vehicle, to operate it during the journey and to use the smartphone as a substitute display. At a price of Euro 199, the BMW Station for the Apple iPhoneTM allows the mobile device to connect into the vehicle’s audio system; it is also fitted with an integrated GPS receiver and a charger for the telephone – all this is achieved without any additional visible cabling. The integrated hands-free system, which includes a high quality directional microphone and automatic radio muting during telephone conversations and navigation announcements, ensures a perfect connection – ideal when combined with the separately available iPhone App “BMW Link“.

Tighter integration of the Apple iPhoneTM into Infotainment.

The BMW iPhone app BMW Link, developed by Original BMW Accessories, enables the driver to use the iPhone in the vehicle ergonomically and safely and is thus a perfect addition to the BMW Station for Apple iPhoneTM. The BMW Link app combines the Apple iPhoneTM functionality of the telephone and the music player with all of their features. These include hands-free conversation, access to the contacts and playlists stored on the device and the display of album covers. There is also a fully-fledged navigation system as well as selected BMW ConnectedDrive services accessed via an optimised user interface.  Navigation through the menu system and font size have been optimised for operation in the vehicle and all of the features are displayed in landscape format.  The driver has access to a multitude of additional services under the menu item “Connected Drive”.  These include the Car Finder – when the telephone is removed from the BMW docking station, the current position of the vehicle is automatically stored – GoogleTM Local Search and Panoramio, which provides photographs of the destination, as well as specially tailored news and worldwide weather information. These services for networked driving, made available as an upgrade via the app, are rounded off by the accident hotline and the breakdown and recovery service, both extremely important safety features.

Since August 2011, the BMW Link app is available in various markets at no charge from the Apple App Store; it is fully functional during the 30-day trial period. Thereafter, the navigation feature can be permanently reactivated for a onetime payment of Euro 49.99. All of the other features remain fully-functional after the trial period has expired, at no charge.

Backseat passengers enjoy flexible use of the Apple iPadTM

A special BMW Apple iPadTM Station has been developed by Original BMW Accessories to ensure that Apple iPadTM users in the automobile always have the network at their disposal. This station is a part of the Travel & Comfort System and is mounted to the back of a headrest, allowing passengers on the backseat optimal access to the Apple iPadTM.  At present, the holder for the first model of the Apple iPadTM is available; the version for the iPad2 will follow in the December 2011. The station is easily adjustable in a number of ways and flexibly adapts to the user’s needs. The Apple iPadTM can be used in both portrait and landscape modes by simply rotating and locking the station.  For office applications such as e-mail or Internet research, the BMW station can be pivoted down to “office mode” and inclined towards the user, in order to allow optimal use of the on-screen keyboard. For applications like watching films, the backseat passengers can position the Apple iPadTM at eye level in “movie mode”.  An attachable stand for using the holder outside of the vehicle, on a desk for example, is included in the package. The new BMW Apple iPadTM station is available since July 2011, supporting all of the features of the Apple iPadTM and in combination with the BMW Car Hotspot guarantees a constant, stable Internet connection. It is priced at Euro 125.

Digital pilot’s headset by BMW

A pilot’s headset needs to combine high functionality with a well-thought-out design, as it is a key contributor to the safety of the pilot and passengers. Audio specialist Sennheiser therefore collaborated with DesignworksUSA, a design consultancy and subsidiary of the BMW Group to develop their new S1 Digital general aviation headset which will launch at AirVenture 2011 in Oshkosh on July 25th. “Safety, excellent speech intelligibility and comfort for fatigue-free listening were our top priorities,” explains Jörg Buchberger, Sennheiser Business Segment Manager Aviation. “We had a lot of completely new ideas for the headset which we wanted to implement together with an experienced partner. We found the perfect one in BMW Group DesignworksUSA.”

Comprehensive view on mobility design

DesignworksUSA specializes in providing strategic design solutions and creative consulting services to partners across diverse industries ranging from consumer electronics, medical devices and transportation to sustainability consulting. The company´s projects in the aviation industry span from commercial airlines to business jets. “We are designing entire cabin solutions as well as cockpits and equipment which provide an excellent backdrop of knowledge and expertise that also translated into the functional and aesthetic expressions of the S1 Digital headset,” said Laurenz Schaffer, President BMW Group DesignworksUSA. The knowledge transfer between multiple industries and disciplines allows DesignworksUSA to bring in fresh perspectives and create surprising results. In the case of developing the S1 Digital aviation headset the creative consultancy leveraged more specifically on its experience in consulting for premium products in various transportation and mobility sectors.

Ergonomic fit and comfort for relaxed and safe flying

The design of the S1 Digital ensures an optimum fit and a high level of comfort. The pilot can regulate the contact pressure of the ear cushions via a small sliding control on the headband to find the optimum balance between comfort and a “tight” fit. Another new feature is the glasses zone on the ear pads: the cushions are particularly soft around the area of the temple arms of sunglasses. “That is not only a comfort feature,” explained Jörg Buchberger. “This zone enables the headset to keep ambient noise out even better. Noise attenuation is excellent.” There are also two soft pads for the headband that avoid contact for the more sensitive central part of the head. The headband itself has an inner metal band made of spring steel that ensures a tailored fit on different head shapes and works with a lower contact pressure than many other headsets. The special ear cup shape and the inclined axis of the headset further improve passive noise attenuation. Compelling aesthetics was maintained alongside all of the functionality and performance the headsets deliver. The ear cups are reminiscent of the sweep of a wing, while the shapes and materials underline the sturdiness and technical quality of the headset. “We have created a powerful, dynamic design that emphasizes performance, reliability and technical innovation of this headset”, said Magnus Aspegren, Director, Singapore Studio at BMW Group DesignworksUSA.

Everything under control

DesignworksUSA paid particular attention to the headset’s control unit. The ergonomic control module with a contoured grip was redesigned for greater ease of use. Its streamlined interface with high-contrast icons on main controls and LED graphics make it ideally equipped for night flights. Highlighted features include separate volumes for each ear: NoiseGard active noise cancellation system on/off, mono/stereo operation, muting on/off and all Bluetooth transmission functions. The Bluetooth-equipped phone or music player can simply be left in a pocket. The unit offers wireless connection to mobile phones and an audio source. It also has two AA batteries to power the electronics of the fully adaptive NoiseGard™ / digital noise cancellation system, which can also alternatively be powered by the on-board power network.

Business Factor Design

The partnership between the creative consultancy and audio specialist started in 2008 with the development of a range of consumer earphones that garnered recognition for its powerful designs including the International CES Innovations Design and Engineering Awards Honoree title for the CX 680 and Singapore President’s Design Award Design of the Year among others. “DesignworksUSA’s in-depth understanding of our partners’ businesses enable tailored solutions, robust results and creative leadership consulting over time,” said Laurenz Schaffer.

    BMW M Bike Carbon Racer

BMW M Bike Carbon Racer in action

BMW M Bike Carbon Racer in action

A healthy number: almost three-quarters of all Germans regularly hop onto a bicycle.* And after experiencing the new BMW M Bike Carbon Racer this summer, that number is definitely going to increase. This bike unites the highest level of riding comfort with an exceptional design. The Munich-based company BMW, which has over 60 years of experience in bicycle manufacturing, will present the first racing bike from the exclusive BMW M Series in June 2011.

M – the strongest letter in the world.

High performance and athleticism, combined with being suitable for everyday use, are the stand-out qualities of the BMW M Series. And now the dynamics of the BMW M automobiles can also be found on two wheels: Thanks to high-tech materials and components, the BMW M Bike Carbon Racer is a high-performance racing machine. Its distinctive frame has been designed in an anthracite carbon look, while colored accents on the rims, handlebar grips, and saddle inlay in the typical BMW M red color show off the origins of this top-quality bike. And anyone that hops in the fi’zi:k Tundra 2 saddle will quickly realize that this is only the beginning of the bike’s captivating appeal.

Carbon – the material the best racing machines are made from.

For those watching the BMW M Bike Carbon Racer ride by from the sidewalk, it’s love at first sight – and there usually isn’t time for a second look with this racing machine. So it really pays to take a look at the frame, which is the heart of every bike. For the new BMW M Bike Carbon Racer, BMW’s developers constructed a carbon frame that is extremely light and stiff, absorbs shocks, and is absolutely corrosion-free. BMW doesn’t use any mass-produced elements in its fleet of bicycles, instead working only with frames it develops itself. And with Shimano Ultegra gears, you can quickly get the 7.4 kg racing bike moving at top speed.

Each component is state of the art.

Whether for athletic endeavors or recreational riding, every detail is perfect when you hit the pedals of the BMW M Bike Carbon Racer. This high-performance bike truly stands out as a result of carefully selected components and the perfect coordination of all the top-quality parts. Even in extreme conditions, the Shimano Ultegra brakes and gear levers allow the rider to change gears quickly, and the uncompromising lightweight design allows for particularly fluid braking. The chain and cassette provide a perfectly smooth transmission of energy both on flat areas of road and on difficult slopes.
The BMW M Bike Carbon Racer is unrivaled in its combination of technically sophisticated equipment with exclusive design – but it is what you would normally expect from a BMW M product. The summer of 2011 will be all about “sheer driving pleasure” for every BMW owner, even those with two-wheeled vehicles.

The BMW M Bike Carbon Racer will be available from select BMW dealers and online at www.bmw-shop.com from June 2011.

A new dimension in driving pleasure and efficiency:
The new BMW X1 xDrive28i with BMW TwinPower Turbo.

With its powerful, sporty and elegant styling, supreme agility, luxurious functionality and innovative equipment features, the BMW X1 is a trailblazer
in the premium compact segment in terms of driving pleasure. Yet again premium carmaker BMW has successfully transplanted the BMW X model concept to a new vehicle segment to create a unique product. Now the
BMW X1 is breaking new ground, this time in terms of the
BMW EfficientDynamics programme. The new BMW X1 xDrive28i is the brand’s first four-cylinder petrol model with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, which comprises High Precision Injection direct petrol injection,
a charge system based on the twin-scroll principle, double-VANOS variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve control.

BMW has timed the introduction of this technology package in the new
BMW X1 xDrive28i to coincide with the launch of a new generation of BMW 2.0-litre petrol engines. The new 180 kW/245 hp powerplant combines a power and torque upgrade over the previous engine with substantially reduced fuel consumption and emissions. This twofold improvement is reflected in some impressive performance specifications. The 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 6.1 seconds (automatic: 6.5 seconds), an improvement of
0.7 seconds (automatic: 0.3 seconds) over the previous model, which was only available as an automatic. At the same time, average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle has been cut by 16 per cent to 7.9 litres/100 km (35.7 mpg imp), with CO2 emissions of 183 grams per kilometre.

The new BMW X1 xDrive28i comes with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. The standard-fitted BMW EfficientDynamics technology includes – amongst other features – Brake Energy Regeneration, an Optimum Shift Indicator, the Auto Start-Stop function and on-demand control of auxiliary units. An optional eight-speed automatic version is also available. Thanks to
its exceptionally high internal efficiency, models with this transmission offer identical fuel consumption and emissions performance to those with the manual version.

As standard specification, the new BMW X1 xDrive28i is equipped with the BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, whose electronically controlled
multi-plate clutch continuously varies the drive power split between the front and rear axles. The intelligent all-wheel-drive system is integrated with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and responds quickly to the first signs
of oversteer or understeer. The result is improved traction in slippery conditions or away from surfaced roads, and improved cornering dynamics. xDrive is calibrated for optimised driving dynamics, which results in precise steering response when cornering. Additionally, the optional Performance Control system can be specified, which matches the drive torque at the rear wheels to driving conditions for even more agile performance.

To add to the agile driving qualities, from spring 2011 the BMW X1 will for
the first time be available with an M Sports package. This option, which is available ex works for all engine versions, comprises a range of suspension, exterior and interior components which have been developed specifically for this compact BMW X model.

The engine: new benchmark in efficiency and dynamism.

BMW X models offer their own distinctive interpretation of typical BMW driving pleasure. The BMW X1 xDrive28i combines this special driving experience with efficiency that is unrivalled in this power class. As a result, this new
BMW X1 model offers sporty power delivery of a kind that was previously confined to six-cylinder engines – but combines it with outstanding fuel consumption and emissions performance.

It’s all down to the latest-generation 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which sets new standards with its various innovative technologies.
The BMW X1 xDrive28i’s powerplant achieves the twofold goal of BMW EfficientDynamics in impressive style: it continuously raises the bar on driving pleasure, while at the same time reducing fuel consumption and emissions. With a displacement of 1,997 cc and world-exclusive BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, incorporating twin-scroll turbocharging, High Precision Injection, double-VANOS and VALVETRONIC, it delivers maximum power of 180 kW/245 hp at 5,000 rpm – 55 kW more than the previous top-powered BMW 2.0-litre petrol engine.

Debut: first application of BMW TwinPower Turbo in a four-cylinder engine.

BMW TwinPower Turbo technology gives the new four-cylinder engine
the sort of power which naturally aspirated engines can only achieve through more cylinders and substantially larger displacement. The four-cylinder engine with its all-aluminium crankcase, including a motor sport-derived bedplate, is lighter and more compact than a six-cylinder engine of equivalent power.
This has direct benefits for the efficiency of the BMW X1 xDrive28i and also, thanks to the reduced front axle load, for agility.

The new engine offers more torque, too, than the previous naturally aspirated engines. Rated torque of 350 Newton metres, which comes on stream at just 1,250 rpm, ensures very good low-end response. The vigorous power delivery, from only slightly above idling, is a very seductive feature of this new engine, and the power climbs steadily all the way to the upper area of the load range. The new BMW X1 xDrive28i has a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of
6.1 seconds (6.5 seconds with automatic transmission). These times are an improvement of 0.7 seconds and 0.3 seconds respectively on those for the previous model with six-speed automatic transmission. The new BMW X1 xDrive28i hits a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph).

The turbocharger is a twin-scroll system. The exhaust streams leaving the
two pairs of cylinders are kept completely separate as they flow through the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger, taking a spiral path to the turbine wheel. This configuration results in very low exhaust back pressure at low engine rpm, and allows the energy of the exhaust gas pulses to be optimally managed and translated into powerful rotation of the turbine blades, without a response delay. The result is instant throttle reaction and typical BMW fast-revving performance.

More dynamic performance plus reduced emissions, thanks to VALVETRONIC, double-VANOS and direct injection.

The fully cylinder head-integrated VALVETRONIC variable valve control system, and the double-VANOS variable intake and exhaust camshaft timing, have a further positive impact on power development. The BMW X1 xDrive28i engine features assembled intake and exhaust camshafts and a latest-generation VALVETRONIC system which is even faster-acting thanks to an optimised stepper motor with integrated sensor.

The patented BMW VALVETRONIC system with seamlessly variable intake valve lift control dispenses with the throttle valve system typical of earlier engine generations. Instead, combustion air mass is controlled inside the engine, resulting in much faster response. Pumping losses are kept to a minimum, so making the engine more efficient.

The new engine’s unusually high efficiency, for a turbocharged unit, is also down to the High Precision Injection petrol direct-injection system. Centrally positioned between the valves, solenoid injectors with a maximum injection pressure of 200 bar precisely control the supply of fuel. The fuel is injected very close to the spark plug, resulting in clean and homogeneous combustion. The cooling effect of the injected fuel also results in a higher compression
ratio than on turbocharged naturally aspirated engines. This results in further efficiency improvements.

The efficiency theme continues with a computer-controlled oil pump and an on-demand electric coolant pump. Also, the new BMW X1 xDrive28i is specified as standard with a six-speed manual transmission with Auto Start-Stop function. This system automatically switches off the engine when the vehicle stops at crossroads or is sitting in stationary traffic in order to prevent unnecessary idling and wasteful use of fuel.

The new engine technology and extensive, standard-fitted
BMW EfficientDynamics features achieve an exceptionally good balance between performance and fuel consumption. The new BMW X1 xDrive28i has average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 7.9 litres /100 km
(35.7 mpg imp), a 16 per cent improvement on the previous model.
CO2 emissions are rated at 183 grams per km.

Features based on award-winning six-in-line engine result in new efficiency benchmark.

A number of key design features of the new engine are based on the latest-generation BMW six-in-line engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. This 225 kW/306 hp unit, fitted in models such as the new BMW X3 xDrive35i, is internationally regarded as a benchmark in dynamic performance and impressive efficiency.

Amongst other tributes, these special qualities earned the six-cylinder engine the Engine of the Year Award 2010. No other 3.0-litre engine offers anything like such a good balance between driving pleasure and fuel economy.
And now, the engine of the new BMW X1 xDrive28i has achieved a similar benchmark position in the 2.0-litre engine class.

Optional eight-speed automatic transmission – greater driving comfort with no increase in fuel consumption over manual transmission.

The BMW X1 xDrive28i is equipped as standard with a six-speed manual transmission. Optionally, the power can be managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. Innovative gear train design makes this transmission comparable in size and weight to the previous six-speed automatic transmissions. The additional ratios provide an appreciable improvement in driving comfort, sporty performance and efficiency. Also optional are a sports leather steering wheel and an M leather steering wheel, which both come
with shift paddles which allow the driver to operate the transmission manually yet still keep both hands on the wheel. In typical M style, the right-hand paddle is used for changing up and the left-hand paddle for changing down.

Further features of the eight-speed automatic are short shift times, minimal torque converter slip, which only occurs at launch, reduced friction losses, since no more than two clutches are ever open at once, and a wide ratio spread, which has benefits both for sprinting performance and for low-rpm cruising. The result is very dynamic acceleration, smooth gear changes and
at the same time a further reduction in fuel consumption. On the new
BMW X1 xDrive28i, this means that models with automatic transmission offer identical fuel consumption and emissions performance to the manual version.

The BMW X1: best-in-segment agility, thanks to BMW xDrive.

A variable drive power split between the front and rear wheels, courtesy of
the new BMW X1 xDrive28i’s standard-fitted BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, results in improved agility – and confident traction away from unsurfaced roads. Via a transfer case with electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, xDrive finely controls the drive power in line with changing conditions, always sending the right amount of power to the axle whose wheels have
    the best grip.

The permanent all-wheel-drive system is integrated with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and with the engine management. Wheel slip is detected at the very first signs by sensors at the wheels. The system then responds with
split-second speed by varying the drive split to efficiently correct under- and oversteer at the earliest possible stage. During cornering, more drive power is sent to the rear axle to improve manoeuvrability and prevent understeer.
The DSC system includes integral ABS, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and also Dynamic Traction Control (DTC). DTC raises the stability control response thresholds, making it easier to move off on snow or sand. Amongst other features, the DSC system also includes a Brake Drying function – for wet-weather driving – and Fading Compensation.

Either as a stand-alone option, or in conjunction with the likewise optional sports suspension, Performance Control applies precisely controlled braking pulses, with torque compensation, as an efficient corrective measure at
the very first signs of understeer on slippery surfaces and under very dynamic cornering.

Maximum agility and all-round safety through state-of-the-art suspension technology and robust body structure.

The agile, precise, confident handling of the BMW X1 xDrive28i is a direct result of its high-performance suspension technology and a very robust body structure. The double-joint spring-strut thrust bar axle at the front and the
five-arm rear axle provide an optimal combination of ride quality and sporty handling. The hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering system comes with precise power assistance.

In part, the BMW X1 owes its extreme torsional rigidity to intelligent use of high-tensile and ultra-high-tensile steels. Material choices, and the positioning and geometry of struts, braces and other supporting members, are designed for maximum crashworthiness, while also optimising weight and agility. Front and side airbags along with side curtain head airbags for the front and rear rows of seats are standard specification. Three-point inertia-reel belts are standard on all seats, with belt force limiters and belt latch tensioners at the front.

The BMW X1’s standard twin round headlights also feature daytime running lights. The optional bi-xenon headlights incorporate sidelights and daytime running lights. They are combined at the rear with LED fibre optic technology which makes the L-shape of the tail-light clusters stand out even more strikingly. Further options for the BMW X1 include High-Beam Assistant, a rain sensor and Adaptive Headlights, which swivel in line with the steering angle.

    Confident styling, state-of-the-art interior functionality.

The BMW X1 delivers unfiltered driving pleasure, all-round sporty performance and extreme agility both in urban traffic and out of town. The styling is marked by confident elegance, upscale functionality and trendsetting modernity. The unique vehicle concept combines typical BMW driving pleasure with a level of interior adaptability which is quite unusual for the compact segment and will appeal to customers with an active and varied lifestyle. Both the versatility and the sporty, agile driving qualities are closely echoed in the body styling, with its seamless transitions between front, sides and rear, and well-defined lines which create fluent connections between the different elements of the body.

The five-door X1 measures 4.45 metres (175″) in length, but despite the smaller dimensions compared with the BMW X6, BMW X5 and BMW X3, it is clearly identifiable as a BMW X model from every angle. Square-contoured wheel arches, increased ground clearance, narrow guard strips along the lower edges of the body and the upright BMW kidney grille all point to robust design. The long bonnet, short front overhang, a long wheelbase of 2.76 metres (108.6″) and the steeply sloping rear windscreen accentuate the sense of length and confirm the sporty credentials of the BMW X1.

The higher seating position and driver-centric cockpit design add to the intense driving experience. This layout also provides convenient entry and gives the driver a commanding view of the road. High-quality materials and striking surface textures, plus iDrive for models equipped with an optional navigation system, all reflect the premium-class quality of the BMW X1. Expressive graphic elements, extensive trim panelling and dynamic styling create a sporty, youthful aura in the BMW X1. Horizontal lines give the instrument panel a layered look which continues into the door trim, accentuating the width of the instrument panel as well as the general sense of spaciousness. The centre control styling creates a clear demarcation between the driver’s and front passenger’s areas.

The rear offers three full-size seats. One or more sections of the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seatback can be lowered to increase luggage capacity from 420 right up to 1,350 litres (14.8 to 47.6 cu. ft). At the detail level, functionality is further enhanced by a wide range of trays, cupholders and stowage compartments.

    Practical, innovative, high-quality optional equipment.

The everyday practicality, driving pleasure and comfortable touring qualities which are hallmarks of the BMW X1 can be expanded even further by a range of top-quality optional equipment features. Roof rails, a storage compartment package and a tow bar with removable ball head provide additional transport capacity. Interior customisation options include sports seats, seat heating, an interior lights package and the large panorama glass roof. The powerful and efficient automatic climate control system offers a choice of five different climate control modes and maintains a pleasant temperature inside the vehicle at all times of year and in all weather conditions. The standard-fitted audio system includes six speakers, a CD drive and an AUX-IN connection for external audio devices. Optionally, MP3 players and other data or music storage devices can be integrated in the in-car entertainment system via a USB interface.

BMW X1 models equipped with the Business or Professional navigation system also feature the new-generation iDrive operating system with centre console-mounted Controller and direct selection buttons, functional bookmark buttons below the climate control panel and a 6.5- or 8.8-inch Control Display. A wide range of driver assistance systems and mobility services from
BMW ConnectedDrive are also available. To supplement the optional
sensor-equipped Park Distance Control system, a further manoeuvring aid can be specified – the optional rear-view camera. BMW ConnectedDrive also offers in-car internet access and innovative solutions for the integration of smartphones and external music players.

The optional apps from BMW ConnectedDrive offer an attractive extension
of the range of infotainment features in the BMW X1 as well. With this special option Apple iPhone users can download free software from the Apple App Store that allows them to select internet radio stations from around the world using the iDrive system or to have the latest posts from their personal Facebook or Twitter account shown on the car’s Control Display. In addition, the online services allow standardised messages to be sent from the car. Additional apps and functions are set to follow in the future.

BMW AT THE GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED

Exactly 70 years after BMW achieved its most famous victory up to that date, the 1940 Mille Miglia winning 328 Touring Coupé will climb Goodwood’s hill. This unique car comes to Goodwood fresh from competing in the 2010 Mille Miglia. Driven by Guiliano Cané, several times a winner of this regularity competition, the Touring Coupé won the event outright, covering the 1,000 miles without a single technical hitch. It is believed to be the first time that the very same car has won the recreated Mille Miglia as well as the original event itself.
